School Guidance Issues
Most parents say that colleges are providing the required college and career planning direction to their children. But observations gleaned from over 10 years of analysis studies exhibit that students aren't getting the help they have to make good decisions about life after high school .
38 minutes a year is the approximate period of time the average student receives from a college advisor on college advising. This statistic is founded upon countrywide averages of student-to-counselor ratios and advisor time grant research according to 2005 report entitled'Counseling and college support in America's High Schools' by Dr. Patricia McDonough.
This naturally is an average.
'My kid is a solid student. He is not at the top of his class, but he is not wrestling either. The school clearly pays the most attention to the students that standout... Either at the top, or the bottom. If you aren't in one of those groups, you fall between the cracks,' asserted the ma of a senior from a big Connecticut public high school .
Not Enough Counselors... Too Many Demands
According to Dr. McDonough's report, the american school advisor organisation ( ASCA ) advises one counselor for every 100 scholars, or a 100:1 proportion. The student-to-counselor ratio across the country's's high schools is approximated to be 315:1. That's 3 times the advised level according to the nation's Center for Educational stats ( NCES ). In some states, such as California, Minnesota, Arizona and Utah, the average is well over 500:1
The average student-to-counselor ratio in private schools is estimated to be 241:1 according to the national Center for instructional stats. While this ratio is better then the public college ratio of 315:1, it still is over 2 times the ASCA's recommendation of 100:1.
Even private schools Long Island are affected.
although private school student-to-counselor ratios are better moms and pops report the direction their children receive is almost completely concentrated on school counseling and placement, not on what the students will do with their schooling when they graduate. </li>
